Vindstad sits at the head of Kjerkfjorden on the outer edge of Lofoten. There is no road: everything arrives by ferry from Reine onto a small quay, and the only buildable ground is a narrow shelf of grass between the mountain and the sea. For around three weeks each December the sun does not rise at all. Soldagen is the day it clears the mountain again.
The GENDO 48 brief asked for a bathhouse for the village first and visitors second, in ordinary winter use. Our proposal sits at the intersection of shelter, exposure and light. Rather than treating the polar winter as a problem to be lit away, the concept works with the absence of light: how a building can hold warmth and company through the dark, and make the return of the sun an event you can feel from inside.
